Climate

Holland is situated in a mild maritime climate with temperatures around the freezing mark in the winter, and an average of 25°C in June, July and August. The days are quite short in the wintertime. In December it turns dark around 16:30. In the summer however, the days are much longer; in June it remains light until after 22:00. During the spring-, summer- and early autumn the weather in Holland is very pleasant. Holland has a long coastline which is quite attractive to visit during the summer. During the fall and wintertime the are very rainy. Normally the winter puts a layer of ice on the canals during a few weeks, which allows ice-skating.

Culture

Liberty: Holland is probably the most liberal country in the world. People are free to express their opinion to a very large extend. Abortion, euthanasia and the use of soft-drugs are legalized, which give Holland ’s citizens great individual freedom. This makes the Dutch tolerant and open-minded, but it also leads to cultural misunderstandings sometimes.
Multi-cultural: The have one of the most multi-cultural societies in the world. Especially in the big cities you will meet people from all different sorts of backgrounds.
Language: The National Language in Holland is Dutch. However, virtually everybody speaks sufficient English in the urban parts of the country. The level of English of Students is very high, which makes communicating quite easy.
Confidence: The Dutch are not shy. People are usually not afraid to give their opinion about something and are quite straight-forward and direct in their way of communicating.
Individualistic: A modern Dutch family is usually not very large. Children leave their parent’s home at quite a young age and it’s not common to live in the same house with both your parents and grandparents.

Travelling

Holland has a large network of public traffic. Within the big cities the main ways of transportation are by bus, tram, or metro. Since cities lie very close to each other, Holland has a big railway network wich trains driving quite regularly.
A very popular and useful way to bridge small distances is by bicycle. All cities have good facilities for bicycling; next to every road you’ll find a bicycle path.
For tourist information, every city or town has a tourist office (called VVV) located in the centre. For other information check www.holland.com/uk/   and select your country.

If your private insurance does not cover you abroad, you will have to take out private health insurance in the .
Non-European citizens: If you have a private insurance, contact your national insurer before arriving in Holland and ask for a statement of your insurance in English. If you don’t have a private insurance. Contact the Dutch embassy in your home country. They will be able to tell you what you need to do.

Accomodation

If you are doing an internship through your school. Ask your university if they have any partnerships with universities in the . Universities usually offer student rooms in the city or rooms at a campus.
We also advise you to ask your host-company if they can help you. Companies might have business-connections that can help you out. Besides, the people working for the company can also have personal connections that might be useful.

If this does not work you can always contact local agencies that can help you find accommodation. Here you will find a list with useful websites*:
